After 9/11, many people have more difficulty feeling safe in everyday situations, especially it public settings. In crowded gatherings, security metal detectors (also called wands) help ensure the public safety by screening potential threats.

Security metal detectors are used in:
• Jails
• Sporting events
• Political rallies
• Some public schools

Security metal detectors rely on a basic system called beat frequency oscillation (BFO). This system involves two coils of wire, which are connected to an oscillator that produces thousands of pulses per second. When the pulses travel the length of the wire, they create radio waves. Then, the waves are received by a tiny receiver which is responsible for the audible “beep.” If the coils pass over a metal object, it changes the length of the waves and coinciding “beeps.”
